Artificial Turf FAQs
Are certain turf products pet friendly?
All of our turf is pet friendly! We have certain types of infill (the sand that gets brushed into the turf) that are specifically beneficial for pet use like deodorizing infill, or acrylic coated sand that doesn’t absorb urine smells. Our turf specialist can help guide the customer for a turf system that best serves their needs. We also recommend a sanitization, deodorizing solution that is used weekly to eliminate smells and disinfect turf from pet waste.
Does turf get hot?
YES! We don’t sugar coat any information – turf will be hot in direct sunlight on hot days BUT there are ways to eliminate heat that will make it comfortable that do not cost anything extra and are easy to do. We have infill that helps keep turf cooler but ultimately the tried-and-true way to cool turf down if you plan to be barefoot on it is to spray the top of turf briefly with a hose to initiate evaporative cooling. As the moisture in the infill evaporates over the period of a few hours it will significantly cool the turf surface down for your enjoyment.
How long does turf last?
Our turf systems for residential landscape use last 16+ years. We have customers from 20 years ago that have had us replace their turf recently. In heavy commercial use or sports applications, the typical life span is 8-14 years. We do sports fields and the majority are being replaced between 8-14 years of use.
How many types of turf are there?
We currently have 21 different SKUs of turf from budget friendly landscape turf to luxury landscape turf to putting greens to sports turf! We ask our clients what their intended use of the turf will be and work within their budget to narrow the selection down to 2-3 options when we present the turf.
How long is the warranty and what does it cover?
Biltright customers are covered by two warranties: an installation warranty and a material warranty. Our material warranty is an industry leading 16-year warranty and covers all manufacturing defects such as fading, deterioration, and manufacturing flaws (in the case of a warranty claim Biltright covers full replacement including labor for the new turf). Our Installation warranty is 3 years and covers seams, edging, base, and anything related to our workmanship. (Note: acts of God and items unrelated to the manufacture or installation process are not covered such as window reflections, or damage by pets, etc.)
How is turf installed (What is included in Biltright’s Installation)?
The existing surface (lawn, ground cover, mulch, rock, weeds, dirt, etc.) is excavated up to 3-4” from finish grade as needed, all the spoils are removed and disposed of, sub-base material is delivered, spread, graded and compacted, base material is typically either concrete recycled road base, class 2 road base, chat, and or a fine layer of Decomposed granite(DG) over the top of the base depending on the application. Once the base is installed we will lay, trim, seam and nail turf edges and seams. Seams are guaranteed not visible – this is something no one else offers in our industry. Finally, turf is infilled with sand or special infill material and brushed into the top of the turf with a motorized brush (Powerbroom). Infill helps keep turf standing tall, weighs the turf system down, gets rid of imperfections in the turf surface, and in some cases helps with deodorizing and keeping turf cool.
How long does installation take?
Our typical installation pace is around 500 Sqft. per day. Our average size job is 800 sf so the average project only takes 1-2 days to complete, however installation duration can vary depending on many factors such as access, and type of install. We never have gaps in our installation. Once we start a project we work through to completion.
What is the lead time for new projects?
We can almost always start a new project within 1-2 weeks! This is for a typical size project 300-1000sf but with larger projects we usually start them a little further out to avoid having gaps in the install schedule. This means from the time a customer signs a project its highly likely by the end of the following week they will be enjoying their new turf! Note: timing largely depends on the customers schedule and or if they have to wait for an HOA approval etc.
What kind of maintenance is required?
This all depends on how much use and what type of use the turf will have. A front yard that never gets walked on is virtually maintenance free besides blowing or raking leaves off the turf and pulling an occasional weed from the edges. In a highly trafficked area like a backyard around a pool occasional grooming with a turf rake or broom is helpful in “fluffing” the yarn and getting the turf to decompress. With heavy pet use weekly sanitization, daily cleanup of pet waste is required to avoid poor smells from developing.
Do you use a weed barrier?
Not anymore! We had for years but after close examination the use of a weed cloth under the turf had no benefit whatsoever. Use of weed barrier has some cons one of which is that with heavy pet urination the weed barrier captures the smell vs allowing for it to dissipate into the earth. In essence the artificial grass is an excellent weed barrier itself along with the 3-4” of aggregate base material which has no nutritional value for weeds to use and no source of light to grow. Regardless of using a weed barrier or not we have seen many customers have weed growth. This is because the weeds do not come from under the turf. They settle in edges, or in the turf on top from wind or other factors where light, and water can supply the weeds what they need to grow. We always recommend clients look for weeds, spray them with their choice of weed killer and then remove early on. “Turf is LOW Maintenance not NO Maintenance” (Note: there are some invasive species of grass/weeds/trees that have the ability to grow under the base layer and pierce through or grow under the turf material such as nutsedge grass and bamboo – when present its important to wait to install turf and treat with the proper herbicide.)
What payment options are available?
Every payment option that Home Depot accepts can be used to pay for your artificial grass project! Including the cherished Home Depot Credit Card! Occasionally HD has a special financing option that customers can use with service providers as well.
How do I schedule an estimate?
Its very easy! Find our Biltright Turf display or marketing material with the store specific QR code. Scan it and follow the prompts for scheduling your turf estimate. This process automatically enters the lead into HD system (and marks your store # as the referring store), schedules the customer directly with our turf specialist, and sends calendar invites and reminders to the customer. If you want to log an associate number to the lead you may enter it at the bottom of the scheduling page. – If you’re old school you can fill out the service request in the system but we highly encourage associates to book using the scheduling QR code we provided on our signs. Why make the customer wait days to hear from someone at our company when they can get an appointment set now with you?
Are estimates in-person?
We always send one of our surveyors physically to the home! – Even the virtual consultation option is just an initial conversation and prequalification process over an online screen share or a phone call. During the online consultation we give our customers generic pricing, answer questions, and then schedule our onsite surveyor to measure, show samples and take photos of the project areas immediately after the online consultation. (NOTE: some of our service areas have in person initial consultations however the wait times are significantly longer for this option, and we highly encourage the virtual consultation for the fastest estimate turn around)
Are estimates free?
YES!!! 100% free! You can schedule a free turf installation estimate here.
How much does it cost?
Turf pricing which includes all the installation steps, material, tax, equipment, labor, disposal costs, deliveries, etc. will run anywhere from $9-12 per SF depending largely on the size, type, and location of each project. EX: 300 sf minimum job will cost more per SF vs a 2500 sf job and a landscape turf install will cost less per sf than a custom putting green.
